A Matriarch of Strength
Lorene Horner, age 84, peacefully passed away in her Snowflake Arizona home on April 4th, 2024. Grace Lorene Blackstock was born on September 15th, 1939, in Vancouver B.C. Canada to Charles and Beryl Blackstock. She grew up in Canada where she met the love of her life, Harold Lawrence Carlson. The two were married on December 1st, 1956, and started their family.
Lorene lived through many hardships; however, her fierce strength always carried her through. At a very young age, and with 3 children, she became a widow. Notwithstanding, she saved up money on her own, and made her first entrepreneurial purchase, a laundromat. A few years later, with children ages 3 to teen, they sailed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for over a year! Lorene’s life was riddled with both difficult trials and incredible experiences. Throughout it all she persisted through.
Lorene had a multiplicity of talents. From gardening and canning to boy scouts, to serving in her church callings she was always busy; often using those talents to help another in need. Her unabashed love of learning resulted in a large library of books as she was an avid reader. However, those books were not the only source of enlightenment, she too was a storyteller! Inclined to share her fascinating life in detail, she would captivate an audience with her eloquent storytelling.
In the end, her stories became fewer as Dementia crept in, but during her lifetime Lorene touched many lives; as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, neighbor, etc. She is survived by her children, Dianna Welte, Debora Carlson, Dolores Austin, Norma McLean, Elizabeth Penick, Bartley Scruggs, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She lived a legacy of strength and caring. Her celebration of life was held on April 13th, 2024, in Snowflake, Arizona.
